In short

The Maltipoo is a designer cross between the Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle, developed in the US as a small companion, weighing 5–15 lbs and living 12–16 years. It's affectionate and adaptable, but needs regular grooming and doesn't like being left alone.

Is it right for you?

A great match if you…

  • want a small, cuddly companion
  • live in an apartment
  • are home most of the day

Think twice if you…

  • have toddlers or rough-playing kids
  • can't budget for regular grooming
  • work long hours away from home

What sets it apart

  1. 01

    Soft, low-shedding coat

  2. 02

    Tiny size

Small enough to carry, but fragile around rough play and falls.

  3. 03

    People-focused nature

They thrive on company and can be vocal when lonely.

01

Personality

Maltipoos are cuddly, playful and want to be wherever you are. They pick up routines quickly and adapt to most homes. Many are alert barkers and get anxious when left out of things.

With kids

Good with gentle older kids; small children can injure them.

With other pets

Usually friendly with other dogs and cats.

With strangers

Friendly but may bark at strangers.

Alone time

Prone to separation anxiety if left too long.

02

Training

Maltipoos are smart and eager to please. Short, positive sessions work best.

  1. How often

1–2 sessions a day of about 5 minutes each.

  2. Socialize early (8–16 weeks)

Between 8 and 16 weeks, focus on handling and grooming, plus gentle exposure to people and noises.

  3. Self-control

Teach a 'quiet' cue and calm alone time early to prevent barking and separation stress.

  4. What it works for

Food, praise and play all work. Use small, high-value pieces and keep treats within 10% of daily calories; with a tiny dog, treats add up fast.

03

Exercise

Short walks and indoor play cover their needs, but they still want daily outings and brain games. They often match their owner's pace.

Exercise a day 30–60 min

Good outlets

  • Short walks
  • Indoor fetch
  • Play dates with gentle dogs

Brain work

  • Trick training
  • Puzzle feeders
  • Hide-and-seek

Best home

Apartment friendly; protect from cold and rough play.

Watch for Avoid jumping from furniture to protect knees, and supervise around larger dogs.

04

Feeding

Adult maintenance for a typical Maltipoo (5–15 lbs) lands around 200–475 kcal a day. Feed to body condition, not the bag's chart alone, and keep treats inside the 10% rule.

The treat limit is the 10% rule for every treat combined. Saylor's liver is suggested at about 2% of daily calories, as a small topper: liver is very rich in vitamin A, so it should not become a staple. Check with your vet if your dog has a health condition or a special diet.
